Judy Wilson, entrepreneur and CEO of First Finished, Inc., was impressed by the symbolism of having just moved her business from downtown Detroit into the affluent Grosse Point suburb. Wilson and her manager of operations, Eric Gilbert, had spent most of the fall of 2001 looking for space that would accommodate the company’s growth. The Grosse Point location seemed perfect. Wilson was excited about the transition, and the new office space offered a grand view.
Yet after only three months, Wilson felt a brewing problem needed to be addressed— Gilbert was continually arriving at the office late. He had been with First Finished since the company opened, and tardiness was just not one of Gilbert’s traits. Because their relationship was based on a mutual respect that had grown into a friendship, Wilson decided to confront him. She asked Gilbert why, since the move, he was always late. His answer was simply, “DWB.” In his explanation, Gilbert was very candid:
Judy, I am a black man driving a white Mercedes from downtown Detroit into an affluent, predominately white suburban neighborhood. The police stop me no matter what route I take into this neighborhood. If I arrive on time it is because I wasn’t stopped. But I refuse to cut short my morning ritual of coffee and the newspaper before I leave for work—to factor in the possibility that the police will hold me up for 15 minutes.
How should Wilson respond? If you were in Wilson’s position, how would you respond?
What, if any, implicit biases are operative in this case? By whom?
What principles of inclusive leadership are involved in this case?
What are the behavioral implications for Wilson and Gilbert?
Answer the above 4 lines but following the headers at the top.
