I think that nursing is an art form, so I think that art is the most important skill for a good nurse manager to have. A nurse manager needs to have a set of skills that can’t be learned right away. Instead, they have to be built up over time with patience, education, and hard work. When I was a unit manager before, I used these skills when reviewing the annual performance reviews for my team. Staff development is important because it helps people learn and makes sure that people are good at the skills they need to do their jobs safely. A nursing manager needs to know how to keep staff, and this is an ongoing skill. It’s important to keep checking on how happy your staff is and come up with ways to reward, thank, and show your appreciation for them. Every six months, we do a survey called “Rounding for Relationships” to find out how happy our staff is. This lets staff talk to a manager about their problems, even if that manager is from a different department. It also gives them a chance to say what operations could be better and what needs to be fixed in their own department.

Relationship management includes handling conflicts, situations, and relationships, as well as being able to persuade others and help them grow professionally. As a nurse leader, it’s important to find problems that need to be fixed right away, whether they have to do with staffing, patients, safety, or families. I have an open-door policy with my staff, so they can talk to me at any time if there is a nursing emergency that needs to be taken care of right away. Promoting team dynamics boosts the morale of employees and can help cut down on bad patient outcomes. Creating a healthy work environment is good not only for your staff and team, but also for patient care and good outcomes related to patient care. Staff burnout can be stopped by promoting stress management and teaching people how to deal with stress.

Diversity means that the nurse manager needs to understand and care about different cultures. People from all over the world work for us, especially now that there are travel agencies. It’s important to talk to your employees about how they act and what they like based on their culture. This is important to show your staff that you value and care for them. We have a few CNAs who are women from other countries. Their work schedules vary based on how many hours they can work and how they get to work. They can only ride with other women and can’t work after dark. We stay sensitive to their cultures and respect the differences between them. Social justice is important because all employees should be treated fairly and equally.

The nurse manager can get help from the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, the American Journal of Nursing, and groups like the American Nurses Association. It’s important for nurse managers to have resources that are available and easy to get to. As nurses, we spend a lot of time on the computer and can do a lot of different kinds of research on the websites that are out there. These are very helpful because they give us access to information and education about leadership skills that help us grow.
