Thompson Family Case Study
Introduction
The case study of the Thompson family is a good reflection of the effects of PTSD in families. The family comprises of a grandmother who recently lost her husband and she is worried. She is concerned about her children while her grandchildren are engaging in unhealthy behavior. It is essential to note that the family requires help since they are demonstrating the symptoms of PTSD. William Thompson is also an individual who needs help after losing his home. The family requires cognitive processing therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and prolonged exposure therapy. The approaches are essential in alleviating fear, trauma, and aggression among the family members (Zinzow et al., 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online). William Thompson requires psychotropic drugs to alleviate the negative effects of trauma in their lives. The purpose of the paper is to examine William in the Thompson family case study, describe therapeutic approaches, and the expected outcomes.
Observations
The Thompson family case study presents various individuals with symptoms of PTSD. One of them is William Thompson who has financial problems. Although he has been fighting in Iraq, he cannot raise money to pay a mortgage. The experience is traumatic since it triggers unwanted memories in his life. He is worried about his future and family.
William Thompson is also affected by a traumatic event after he became homeless. Apart from losing his home, he has been a war veteran and thus the memories of encountering battle in Iraq are disturbing him. She acknowledges that he is experiencing hard times since he was forced to move in with his brother. William Thompson is thus presenting symptoms of PTSD according to DSM-5 criteria (Zinzow et al., 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online). He is not comfortable with moving with his brother but the circumstances forced him. Therefore, William Thompson is depicting various symptoms of PTSD such as irritability and destructive behavior.
Therapeutic Approaches
William Thompson will require therapeutic approaches such as cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy. Cognitive processing therapy is an essential therapy that helps individuals to modify and challenge beliefs related to trauma (Cooper et al., 2017). It requires 12 sessions with each taking 60-90 minutes. It helps establish realities about traumatic events that were beyond the control of individuals. It helps clients to remain guilt-free and move on with life. Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on changing thought patterns, behavior, and beliefs that lead to difficulties in life (Cooper et al., 2017). For example, William Thompson’s beliefs are hindering him from experiencing quality life. He is living in regrets over situations he could not control.
Prolonged exposure therapy is another therapeutic approach that helps PTSD patients to start recovering. It helps confront the issues that trigger negative memories or fear (Nixon & Bralo, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). During the sessions, individuals learn how to take a depth breath to ease their tension. They will also deliberately identify the issues they have been avoiding and thus confront them (Nixon & Bralo, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). The therapy is essential for William Thompson who lost his home and has memories of the war in Iraq. He requires to confront the issues facing him since he is the only one who canes the critical decisions others cannot.
William Thompson can take psychotropic drugs to help him reduce the symptoms. For example, antidepressants can help him relieve the effects of his worry (Bernardy & Friedman, 2017). William Thompson is also one of the most affected persons in Thompson’s family. The drugs will also help the patient to cope with the condition. The reason is that treatment is a long-term process that will require a change of perspectives to avoid adverse effects of further financial losses. Apart from pharmacological therapy, he needs to consult with a counselor to ensure a comprehensive approach to psychological issues.
Expected Outcomes
The expected outcomes are that different individuals will reduce their fear, aggression, and fear. For example, I expect that cognitive processing therapy will help William Thompson to confront their beliefs and change their perspectives (Bernardy & Friedman, 2017). It will also help him to understand that they are not to blame for all the incidences that occurred. Therefore, they should stop feeling guilty. On the other hand, cognitive behavior therapy will challenge William Thompson to change his behavior (Rodin et al., 2017). Eventually, I expect William Thompson will live in peace and less worried about the circumstances. It will also restore healthy relationships among the clients to promote peaceful coexistence.
Conclusion
Thompson family case study is an example of many families that experience diverse social problems. William Thompson has problems similar to the symptoms of PTSD according to the DSM-5 criteria. It is thus important to apply various theories such as cognitive processing therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and prolonged exposure therapy. The three therapeutic approaches are essential in achieving the expected outcomes. The expected outcomes are reduction in the level of anxiety, aggression, and fear. The people who are highly affected include William Thompson who can take medication to relieve the negative effects of fear and anxiety in their lives.
