Problem Justification
Figure 1: Bullying offenders and victims. Source: Patchin & Hinduja.
As seen from the figure, many youths especially the students are faced with the problem of cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is the harassment which occurs in automated or digital texts or messages via picture messages, social media, chat rooms, and cameras. Social media comprises blogs, Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter amongst others. As affirmed by Gonzales, social media in the 21st century has become a major source of provocation amongst the youths. Social media channels bring users to cyberspace or virtual reality which is not conceivable in the real domain, offers anonymity, and similarly leads to the unjustified practice of the authority dominance as well as permitting information or data to go viral (Gonzales. P 14). Due to its inferences, social media causes both legal and ethical issues which influence the lives of youths such as harassment.
The first impact of cyberbullying is the issue of reduced or poor performance by the students. Cyberbullying impacts the victims both mentally, emotionally, and physically (Education.Vic.Gov.Au). For example, students use social media platforms including Facebook and messages to bully against other students of other races, religions, cultures, or nationality. As a result of this, the victims of the menace have their results hampered due to the repeated actions by their colleagues. They perceive themselves as odd one outs which in turn affects their daily activities as students. Thus due to cyberbullying the class participation of students becomes poor hence leading to poor performance.
Suicide is also another effect of bullying in school. The most dramatic and visible results emanating from bullying is the ability to commit suicide or taking his or her own life. As a result of cyberbullying the student feels so depressed and despondent hence thus lacking one to provide help from (Education.Vic.Gov.Au). Due to this thought, the student perceives only suicide to be the only solution to their unending problems. Committing suicide usually takes place after a long or extreme social ridicule and embarrassment. In the US and Canada, it is established that young girls usually get bullied and suffers for many years till their mid-teenage when they resort to killing themselves without any prior signs. However, the rate of suicide emanating from gender is affected by gender where girls are at a higher risk of killing themselves rather than the boys. The girls who resort to suicide leave a note or message describing their suffering while the boys on the other hand resort to violence. One of the major cases is the Columbine High School massacre depicts the male suicide after harming others (Mears, Melissa, and Angela. 940). In the US, nearly 94% of teenagers have social media accounts. They are always online sharing with their friends while also harassing others. If the parents are not keen on how their children are using their electronic gadgets, they may be breeding the next cohorts of serial killers in their homesteads.
Furthermore, the victims of the cyberbullying menace suffer from mental injury. Pain, fear, suffering, loss of dignity and pride, anxiety, worry, depression, and loss of self-esteem of self-confidence are some of the long-term effects associated with cyberbullying (Education.Vic.Gov.Au). To make matters worse for the victim is the inability of the offender to stop the malicious practice after a series of education or warnings. Since the introduction of new technological platforms, the issue of cyberbullying has been known by many guardians and parents. However, their assumption about the associated effects highly impact the teenagers who are victimized. Self-esteem is one of individual’s attribute which is highly impacted by cyberbullying. As a result of the bullying cases, an individual will develop losses self-esteem. A child who has lost self-esteem in his or her life get themselves into many life-threatening challenges such as the act of committing suicide or even not putting more effort in class. The victims also of cyberbullying suffer from depression and anxiety for year or months. As a youth or student, depression negatively affects their future ventures. Though they may be having some future goals or plan about business or politics, bullying shutters their dreams thus leaving them in the hopeless situation. This is a menace which highly affects the day to day doings of the kids in the society. With the advancement of technology, the case of cyberbullying has increased. Combating against these issues will aid in curbing against the adverse effects of mental torture associated with the menace. Additionally, as described by Ayers Jr & Chairman, amongst the adolescent, social media receives a great deal of use. As of 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service, most adolescents in America reported using 1 hour 11 minutes social media on a daily basis. Though social media has aided in aspirational development, identity management, and peer engagement, it has concomitant costs of victimization, social anxiety, and dejection which negatively influence the growth of the youths or adolescents (Uhls, Ellison, & Subrahmanyam. 70).

All these solutions can be adopted by the federal; government and institutions in order to curb with the issue cyberbullying. The policies should stretch from the institutions of learning to the workplace. For instance, one of the core policy should entail the punishment of the cyberbullying offenders. Cyberbullying ought to be treated as a criminal offence which necessitates for a court case. The offender will be subjected to a due legal process. Despite being young or the age factor, the offenders ought to pay a maximum penalty as stipulated in the Juvenile court rulings. Also, in the class activity, anti-harassment policies must be established.
Furthermore, social media has highly enhanced the way people communicate in the 21st century. With the rising case of teens harassment in the social media, using these measures will be of the core value in eradicating the menace. The issue of bullying has caused much physiological, physical as well as mental distractions amongst the teens. Social media has been a core platform where teens have been either victims or offenders of bullying. To curb against the menace, parents ought to ensure proper or good behavioural approach to their kids. Teaching kids about the proper use of social media and other technological platform will aid in curbing the issue of discrimination and also bullying in social media. Also, the use of juvenile court cases will aid in reducing the menace. The offenders of the cyberbullying ought to be punished and even sentenced to imprisonment if found guilty. Additionally, kids develop inappropriate behaviours when using mobile phones. Sending or texting inappropriate pictures is a common phenomenon in the 21st century. The photos may be sent to the wrong person hence goes viral. If the kids get in touch or access these photos, they will be morally corrupted.
Conclusion
Cyberbullying has been a core cause of distress and depression amongst the youth especially the students. Cyberbullying is an intentional and aggressive behaviour which is repeatedly carried out and involves an imbalance of power. It has led to reduced self-esteem, poor performance in school, adverse behaviours such as being suicidal, and also mental injury. To curb against these vices which emanate from cyberbullying, adequate policies ought to be formulated as well as the involvement of parents in guiding kids on the proper use of social media platforms. These practices will eradicate the cyberbullying menace in institutions.
