Television shows have an impact on world views and beliefs. One of the television shows I have watched in the past is Full House sitcom. The television show is an encouragement since it shows that Stephanie is thankful despite the absence of her mother. Watching the show was impactful in showing that families can be complete despite the loss of dear ones. I was encouraged to avoid viewing orphans as disadvantaged children or single parents as weak people. I have realized that families come together to provide for the missing parent in a family. My expectation while growing up was that families and friends would stand up for each other during difficult times. I have seen families deserted and children struggling to find shelter when their breadwinner dies. The reality is different from what the sitcom portrays about families coming together to support one another during difficult times, especially during the pandemic.
Will & Grace is one of the revolutionary sitcoms since it featured the LGBTQ+ community. The sitcom was an encouragement to society to embrace people with diverse sexual orientations. At first, it was a shock but I was encouraged that society needs to embrace everyone with love. Living in harmony is a tool that can change communities. My hatred for people with diverse sexual orientations has changed since I watched the sitcom. In my adulthood, I have seen the opposite of what I would expect about embracing diversity. I have seen LGBTQ+ people experiencing hatred on social media to the extent some of them commit suicide. The experiences are different from the expectations after watching the sitcom.
Boy Meets World is another popular sitcom that premiered in the late 1990s. The sitcom was a display of the role of teachers in guiding young people about worldly pleasure. A teacher, Mr. Feeny, talks to Ben Savage. The characters were vital in demonstrating the art of growing up in the 1990s. The sitcom was popular in highlighting the need for teachers, guardians, and parents to guide their children in the best way they should go. The sitcom appreciates that the world is full of danger and the only solution is for parents and guardians to play the supportive role of helping teenagers to overcome the dangers. I thought that adult life would involve getting moral support from other people. Today, when I find myself alone struggling to accomplish simple goals I realize that the sitcom did not create the actual reality about adulthood.
Mr. Bean is another comedy that has changed my perspective of life. One of the lessons from the comedy show is that there is always an opportunity to be happy despite the challenges in life. The main character Rowan Atkison is struggling to complete daily activities. Despite the challenges, he maneuvers and successfully completes the tasks. I always loved watching the show since it would take away depressive thoughts about school life, family, or the future. One of the mistakes I made while watching Mr. Bean at a young age is to believe that adult life would be smooth. I watched how Mr. Bean would run away with multiple mistakes at the home, workplace, and with the police. I never thought adult life would be more serious and attract punishment for the simple mistakes of failing to adhere to the law.
