Scenario
When the patient speaks and understands only little English, other forms of communication to offer the relevant education to the patient includes the use of written communication. Written materials provide an opportunity to detail all the relevant information relating to the need for full assessment before being discharged. The written information would improve the understanding of the key medical information. It is also recommendable to use of trained interpreter and family member to help in communicating the information to the patient. Communicating the assessment information to the social worker would also help in informing the patient about the medical interventions.
To assess whether the patient understands the discharge instructions, conducting follow-up interviews is critical. The follow-up interviews will make it possible to know whether the patients had fully understood the discharge questions. Another way is repeating the discharge instructions to the patient to ensure that they have a full grasp of the discharge instructions (Paternotte, et al., 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service). Repeated communication of information makes it memorable and thus, it is critical. Working with the family member supporting the patient to know whether the patient understands the discharge information and instructions fully. Other approaches include adding visual information and diagrams into the discharge instructions to make it easy to understand.
The actions of the staff member will negatively impact on the patient care and patient care experience when he does not communicate to the patient effectively. Good communication about the medical intervention and discharge instructions will improve the patient care and patient care experience. The staff member should ensure that they interact with the patient closely and ensure that they understand the assessment and treatment process.
The staff member undermined the ethical values of patient education policy through delaying the discharge of the patient without proper communication (Paternotte, et al., 2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online). The patient only understands little English and the staff member failed to take ethical responsibility to ensure that the patient understand the reason for the delay in discharge and the need for assessment for just a fall.
