COMS 320 Litke – Exam 2 Fall 2020

Exam 2 provides an opportunity to explore selected ideas from chapters 7-10. Following is a list of 10 concepts with related theorists. You are to select FOUR of the following ten options. Begin by reviewing the section in the chapter related to each of the four concepts/theorists selected. Then, conduct a search of online sources related to your topic area/theorist to further explore each of the selected topics. There are a variety of resources available online about each of these topics Based on your online research and reading from the chapter, you should have acquired a good sense of the selected topics. Use this information to provide a SUMMARY of what you learned. Each of the four summaries should be about a half page in length (double-spaced). Aim for a total of two-pages for Exam 2 (maximum length is three pages total).

Your summary should be your own explanation of the material. Avoid quotes. I am looking for your learning. The assignment requires you to consult available online sources which, with the text, will inform your understanding of these topics and theorists. Assuming that your work is original, no reference list is required for this exam. Do not plagiarize any material from any source, previous assignment, or person.

Select FOUR choices from this list of topics (with related theorists). Emphasis on the concept versus theorist for each option will vary and I will leave it up to you how you balance this. There should, however, be some discussion of both components for each of the four selections made.

1.The DARE project/Frederic G. Cassidy (chapter 7)

2.Pidgins and creoles/Derek Bickerton (chapter 7)

3.Comparative linguistics and protolanguages/Sir William Jones (chapter 8)

4.Grimm’s Law/Jacob Grimm (chapter 8)

5.Universal Grammar/Noam Chomsky (chapter 9)

6.Spoonerisms/Archibald Spooner (chapter 10)

7.Phrenology/Franz Joseph Gall (chapter 10)

8.Broca’s aphasia/Paul Broca (chapter 10)

9.Wernicke’s aphasia/Carl Wernicke (chapter 10)

10.Critical period/Genie (chapter 10)

Requirements:

Responses must be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, standard margins on ALL sides, (unjustified), black ink. Responses should be well written, thoroughly proofread and edited, well organized and appropriately formatted. See the “Guidelines for Written Work” in the course syllabus. Review expectations and policies regarding academic honesty.

Exams will be evaluated on content, ability to demonstrate understanding of the material, organization, style, language, and format. I would expect that your exam is presented in four indented paragraphs (each paragraph would summarize your exploration and learning on each of the four selected concepts and related theorists). Expected length for each of the four summaries is half a page, double spaced, for a total of two pages (maximum length is three pages total).
