Cloud Computing
Abstract: The Article, A View of Cloud Computing, talks about the innovative idea of cloud computing that has helped businesses save tremendously on wasting costly resources. Over the past ten years cloud computing has experienced tremendous solutions and changes to become compatible with the world of computing today.
Keywords: Cloud computing, storage space, performance.
INTRODUCTION
The Article “A View of Cloud Computing” talks about the innovative idea of cloud computing that has helped businesses save tremendously on wasting costly resources. The paper focuses on clarifying the confusion on cloud computing and explaining the concept better in terms of opportunities, obstacles, quantifying cloud against convectional computing, and clarification of terms. Through proper understanding of the paper, users are more informed on the various aspects that surround cloud computing.
I. SUMMARY
A. Contribution of the Paper
The paper contributes to the analysis of cloud computing as opposed to the usual convection computing. It is proper to say that the author intended to steer people to technological advancement through the acceptance of new developments. Today, companies that reside in the cloud only pay for the resources they consume [1]. The paper contributes to the computing world by selling the benefits of using the cloud.
B. Problem Statement
Even though the paper addresses major benefits of the cloud, such as the decrease in electricity bills, bandwidth, software, and hardware, there is a downside to the cloud approach. The omission of private clouds from the cloud computing atmosphere has caused a controversy among experts [2]. Unless one is a member of large data centers such as Google, they may not enjoy the full benefits of cloud computing.
C. Major conclusions
Surge computing is a conclusion to the problem that faces small scale clouds in acquiring full benefits. The ability to use both the public and private cloud would strengthen resource pooling and allow flexibility on the provider side [3]. Surge computing allows developers to use the public cloud as an alternative when all local resources are temporarily unavailable or exceeded.
II. COMMENTS
A. What do You Think About the Paper
The paper is quite informative and addresses both obstacles and opportunities for cloud computing. As much as the authors campaign for the cloud system, they also give both sides of the picture – the negative and the positive. This gives readers and users an insight into what to expect. The possible confusion on what the cloud is and its beneficial uses are done away with. Through the economic analysis of cloud computing, one realizes the fact that users will sooner than later require additional storage space at a cheaper price which is offered by the cloud.
B. Anything You Learned from the Paper
I learned the three aspects that are beneficial for the pricing point of view once a company decides to pursue cloud computing. They involved (1) the infinite resources that allow for surges hence giving the computing users an easy time when making future plans, (2) allowing users to start small and expand at their own pace, (3) making payments for the cloud in short term as needed.
C. Three improvements or solutions to the issues illustrated by the paper over the past almost 10 years.
Data transfer bottlenecks, performance unpredictability, and bugs in large scale distributed systems are three examples of problems that were experienced ten years ago but have experienced improvements over time. Data transfer bottlenecks meant that applications were the most affected since the amount of data they processed were in large quantities. Some applications intended to create their cloud systems which have become frequent today. Companies such as Apple have opted to create iCloud for their company which is a system that has been working well and has also been used by the company to make extra money by charging their clients an amount for space on their cloud. In the case of predictability, the cloud is more predictable today because of the ability to use Six Sigma in processes and execution. Even though the method is not perfect, lower variances enable predictions. There are still bugs in the cloud, but it is easier to avoid them, such as rooting out data overloading and checking the basics before running functions.
