Question description
At all times, question the evidence that you come upon. Look for contradictions, confusions. Stay alert to what is NOT being presented as well, to what is “conspicuous by its absence.” Pick one of these topics and respond to/add to/disagree/agree to this post in 50 words or more. This was the website used under Civil War: http://amhistory.si.edu/militaryhistory/exhibition/flash.html1. Serving in the Union Navy While the Foner text does state that the navy grew during war time, and that over 24,000 African Americans served during the war, it does not truly say how large the Union Navy had become during the war. At the start of the war the Northern Navy had just 9000 officers and men serving. This number grew to its largest point of 118,000 at the height of the war. The Smithsonian exhibit goes on to explain that many of these men that had enlisted came from other professions and were entirely new to the sea faring life. What is interesting is that many enlisted willingly into the Navy to avoid be drafted by the Army, where the mortality rate was much higher. 2. Grant’s Vicksburg Victory Medal The book states that 30,000 Confederate soldiers were captured at the battle of Vicksburg, one of the largest turning points in the Civil war. The entire battle of Vicksburg accounted for very low casualties, which when compared to battles such as Gettysburg seems strange given the brutality of similar conflicts. Only 500 Confederate lives were lost compared to the 3199 Union losses. General Grant realized that the city could not be taken by force, so a siege operation was created to eventually cause the surrender of the city. The Smithsonian site has an interesting quote on the relevance of this battle: “Vicksburg is the nail head that holds the South’s two halves together” – Confederate President Jefferson Davis. 3. Christian Fleetwood’s Medal of Honor Blacks were allowed to enter the service and fight alongside whites when the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863. Their actions during the war led many Republicans to believe that emancipation must too bring with it equal protection under the law, according to Foner(417). Fleetwood is one of the many Medal of Honor recipients who gave reason for republicans to have this mindset. Fleetwood believed this, and wrote in a pamphlet that writers who would “awaken even a few to interest in [black] achievements, and one be found willing and fitted to write the history that is their due, that writer shall achieve immortality.”
