Public policy advocacy is important because it can address the social determinants of health, which are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age . These conditions affect the health status, behaviors, and access to care of individuals and communities. Public policy advocacy can promote health equity by advocating for policies that improve the social determinants of health, such as income, education, housing, environment, and transportation. Public policy advocacy can also protect and expand the funding and resources for public health programs and services that prevent disease and promote wellness .

Public policy advocates need to conduct research to identify the problems, solutions, and evidence for their policy proposals. They also need to educate policymakers, stakeholders, and the public about the issues and the benefits of their policy proposals.
