They also collected wild plants and berries that supplemented their diet. They traded their surplus crops with other tribes or with European traders.

Sioux women also had some influence in political and social matters. They could divorce their husbands by simply throwing out their belongings from the tipi. They could also choose their husbands or refuse a marriage proposal. They had a voice in tribal councils and could veto a decision to go to war. They also had some spiritual power as healers or keepers of sacred objects.
