Legal Requirements

In order for a wedding to take place in ancient Rome, there were certain legal requirements that had to be met by both parties. The most fundamental one was the **conubium**, or the right to marry a Roman citizen. This right was granted only to freeborn Roman citizens who were not closely related by blood or adoption. The conubium also determined the legal status of the children born from the marriage, as only those who had both parents with conubium were considered legitimate heirs.

Another legal requirement was the **consent** of both the bride and the groom or their fathers. The consent was expressed verbally in front of witnesses during the wedding ceremony. The consent could also be given by a written contract or by a symbolic act, such as the bride’s acceptance of a ring or a coin from the groom. The consent was essential for the validity of the marriage and could be withdrawn at any time by either party.

A third legal requirement was the **dowry**, or the property that the bride brought to the marriage. The dowry was usually provided by the bride’s father or guardian and consisted of money, land, slaves, jewelry, or other valuables. The dowry was meant to contribute to the expenses of the household and to secure the bride’s financial position in case of divorce or widowhood. The dowry remained under the control of the bride or her guardian during the marriage and was returned to her in case of separation.

Preparations

The preparations for a wedding in ancient Rome involved several steps and rituals that aimed to ensure the auspiciousness and success of the marriage. One of these steps was choosing a suitable date for the wedding. The Romans believed that some days were more favorable than others for weddings, depending on the religious calendar and the phases of the moon. Generally, **the wedding would take place in June** due to the god Juno, who was the patroness of marriage and women. Weddings would never take place on days that were considered unlucky, such as **the Kalends**, **the Nones**, **the Ides**, **the Parentalia**, or **the Lupercalia**.

Another step was performing various rites of purification and divination for both the bride and the groom. These rites included bathing in water from a sacred spring or river, offering sacrifices to various gods and goddesses, consulting augurs or haruspices about omens and auspices, and wearing amulets or charms to ward off evil spirits. These rites were meant to cleanse and protect the couple from any negative influences that could harm their marriage.
