Biology Of Cells And Organisms Assignment | Homework For You

Instructions WRITTEN REPORT FOR BIOLOGY 10004 – Biology of Cells and Organisms INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION INSTRUCTIONS: You are required to write the Results (graph and text) and Discussion sections of a report of an experiment. Use the template provided (see bottom of page). You have been given the researcher’s data, and information about the experiment is presented below. In this report the Biology textbook must be cited at some point in the Harvard Style as described in re:cite (Click on the Citing tab in the LibGuide for more information about citing, and the link to re:cite). Additional references are not necessary, but if cited must be cited in the same style.

Do not cite chapter and page numbers and do not quote. The report must be submitted as a PDF via Turnitin by 11:59pm on Friday, 7th April. THE EXPERIMENT An experiment was performed on the plant Gramineus xerophilus, a native species from Queensland. This species was known to grow faster and have better tolerance to dry conditions during the summer months than other species in the genus. The aim of the experiment was to learn more about how the plant photosynthesised.

The researchers used a radioactive tracer (14C) in order to deduce the sequence of photosynthetic reactions in the plant. Seven leaf segments of equal size were placed in a testing chamber and provided with conditions suitable for photosynthesis (moderate light, warm temperature, high humidity) for a period of time to allow them to adjust to the conditions. Radioactive carbon dioxide (14CO2) was then injected into the chamber to start the experiment. Over the course of the experiment (140 seconds) the leaf segments would have had substantial amounts of 14CO2 available for photosynthesis.

At different times after the introduction of the 14CO2, leaf segments were removed from the chamber and immediately treated to stop further metabolic activity. For instance, the second segment removed would have been exposed to 14CO2 for ten seconds. From each segment, organic compounds known to be associated with the various photosynthetic pathways were isolated, and the amount of radioactivity in them was measured. The total 14C incorporated by leaf segments was determined to have increased at a constant rate over the course of the experiment. The data you have been given shows the proportion of the total 14C in the individual compounds at different stages after 14CO2 introduction. These proportions are expressed as a percentage.
