Task The practical report is an individual report of approximately 1000 words in length that addresses the requirements as described below.The report is to be prepared using a word processing software package and printed double spaced in 12 point font. The printed report is to be stapled in the top left hand corner. It is not to be bound or enclosed in any sort of binder or folder. The report must be submitted to the YourTutor academic skills facility via the link on the Biodiversity E-Learning website. The report must be submitted to the Turnitin via the link on the Biodiversity E-Learning website. Your report must contain the following: Turnitin Originality Report (Essential, No points) No marks will be awarded unless your report (except the Assignment Cover sheet) has been submitted to Turnitin.

No marks will be awarded for your report if the Originality Report shows greater than 24% similarity to other sources for the text of your report. Do NOT include the assignment cover sheet in the material that you upload to Turnitin. Do include all of the rest of your report. You can upload multiple documents if required. YourTutor Response (Essential, No points) Day students must hand in a copy of the response from YourTutor to the draft of your report. Composite students must include this document with the final version of the report that they submit online using the multiple file upload option. YourTutor provides help with academic writing and research by providing constructive feedback on literacy, structure, grammar and referencing. You should also make use of this feedback to improve your report.

No marks will be awarded for your report if you do NOT provide a copy of the response from Your Tutor. Title (< 20 words, 5 points) Write a short title for your report that briefly describes its content (5 points). Introduction (~150 words, 20 points) Write several paragraphs that introduce your report. You must address the following: What is anthropogenic climate change (5 points)? How does climate affect phenological processes or behaviour of different organisms (5 points)? How are biological responses to climate change measured (5 points)? What is the aim of your report (5 points)? Results (~100 words, 5 points) Briefly list in a table the 10 sightings that you reported to ClimateWatch (5 points).

The sightings can be 10 different focal species or 9 sightings of different individuals of one species in different locations and 1 sighting a different species or any combination of these. Your 10 focal species must include organisms from at least two groups shown on ClimateWatch. Organisms must be correctly identified and must be located in habitats listed on ClimateWatch. These do not include cages, zoos, pots or similar structures. See the examples below and on ClimateWatch. Do not include the full details of each sighting within the body of your report; these belong in the Appendix.

How have these similar species been used to record the effects of climate change and what have these reports shown? Write a paragraph that discusses the limitations of citizen science projects and how these can be dealt with (5 points). Write a paragraph that discusses the wider relevance to human society of these climate change studies (5 points). Conclusion (< 100 words, 5 points) Write a paragraph that draws your whole report together with a conclusion (5 points). References (10 points, not within 1000-word limit) List the full details of at least 10 relevant scientific papers (i.e., published in a scientific journal not as a news item or newspaper or magazine article) that have provided you with the information that you have used in your report (5 points).

These papers must be cited in your text using the Harvard UWS name-year method (5 points). These papers must be listed in alphabetical order by first author in the Reference list. Follow the instructions and examples on the Western Sydney University Library Guides Referencing and Citation webpage. Like other academic publications, sources of scientific papers can be recognized by the [Peer Reviewed Journal] notation next to the journal details when searching for items using the Western Sydney Library search facility. Sources other than scientific papers can be used, but will not count towards the required minimum of 10 relevant scientific papers.

Appendix (10 points, not within 1000-word limit) List the full details (5 points) for the ten sightings that you reported to ClimateWatch. Also include the ten photographs (5 points) you uploaded to ClimateWatch. Your records must contain all required information to be complete. The details required differ for species groups. Make sure you know what is required before collecting data if you are not using an iPad with a network connection or a smartphone. Consult the ClimateWatch website for full details required and for descriptions of the focal species. You can only record details of the ClimateWatch focal species. Once you have recorded ten sightings, logon to the ClimateWatch website and download your sightings as a csv file. This file can be opened in MS Excel.

The data can be copied from Excel and placed in a MS Word document. To ensure that all of the data appears on the page of your MS Word document, select the data, then right click and select AutoFit > Autofit to Window. Include this table as an Appendix. Do not include all of the downloaded details within the body of your report. Your photographs must clearly show the organisms you have identified and reported to ClimateWatch. Incorrectly identified organisms will result in the loss of points.
