Assessment Brief Details:
The assignment will consist of a 3000 word illustrated essay of a subject of your choosing that relates to an aspect
of the module lecture programme. The theme of the essay should develop in response to themes and ideas raised
in lectures and seminars/workshops.
The essay should be an investigation of a chosen topic, that address a subject that fits within one or more of the
overarching four themes of the module lecture series: identity; culture and society; communication and
representation; industry. It should clearly identify and investigate a fashion ‘issue’ and relate this to the history
and broader context of the chosen issue or topic.
The essay must be illustrated with images. These images can help to explain the theses and issues in the essay or
can provide be analysed within the essay to help analyse your chosen topic. Your images must be clearly
captioned to provide the relevance of that images to the essay and provide the source/reference for the image All
images should be clearly referred to in the main body of the essay, or example ‘(see Figure X)’ or ‘in Figure X…’
This is an illustrated, narrative, contextual essay and NOT a marketing or brand report. It should therefore outline
an issue that relates to fashion and situates the discussion within the history of fashion. It must use published
academic sources to situate and explain the chosen topic and relate it to existing discussions and theories relating
to fashion. The essay can include references to relevant market intelligence to situate the chosen topic where
relevant.
The aim of the essay is to demonstrate an understanding of fashion objects and theory, culture and society within
a specified historical context. The assignment will involve:
 Selection of a topic which arises from a current fashion ‘issue’
 A breakdown and analysis of the key components of the topic selected
