Apoptosis

Apoptosis is a very common mechanism of cell death that contributes to normal cell turnover, and there are many examples of the utility of apoptotic cell death. Apoptosis is also known as programmed cell death because the steps follow an orderly sequence (a death program), and tissue disruption, organ dysfunction, and inflammation are minimized.

Why is it important for cell death programs to exist? How do they contribute to normal physiology and the prevention of disease? What are the characteristics of Necrotic and Apoptotic Cell Death Pathways?

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is an important mechanism that helps to maintain normal tissue homeostasis by eliminating cells that are no longer needed or are damaged beyond repair. This process helps to prevent the accumulation of cells that could potentially become harmful, such as cells that have become cancerous. In addition, apoptosis plays a role in the development and function of the immune system, as it helps to remove cells that are infected by viruses or bacteria.

There are several characteristics that are specific to the apoptotic cell death pathway. Apoptotic cells typically undergo structural changes, such as shrinking and rounding up, and they may also exhibit changes in the expression of specific proteins on their surface. In addition, apoptotic cells are typically recognized and phagocytosed (engulfed and removed) by nearby cells, which helps to minimize inflammation and tissue disruption.

Necrosis, on the other hand, is a form of cell death that occurs when cells are damaged by external factors, such as trauma or infection. Necrotic cells undergo rapid and uncontrolled cellular degeneration, and they often release their contents into the surrounding tissue, leading to inflammation and tissue damage. Necrosis is not a regulated process like apoptosis, and it can be harmful to the organism.
