Objective: Analyze why most critical thinkers either accept or reject, consider reasonable or unreasonable, news that they receive from various sources. Explain what you think is the obligation journalists today must adhere to, why they need to stick to certain standards and what can happen if they do not. Where do you think our journalists in the U.S. are headed? Will they focus more on accuracy, given the many sources and platforms we have for receiving news? Will or should some news sources, like Facebook or Twitter, be required to adhere to some restrictions? Answer these questions in your essay. Here are steps to take while preparing the essay: Step One: Read and analyze how the authors of the three texts we have read in Making Sense, Chapter Seven, differ in their perspectives as to what causes misunderstanding, lack of comprehension of facts. Quote, paraphrase each author’s thesis and list their supports. Decide which author clearly explains and develops a perspective of the way people today receive and process news. Take note of their fundamental premises (see Ch 3 Making Sense). Here are some things to consider while note taking: Consider the audience that Frank Bruni is addressing. You will have discussed this before. Now, consider: What does Bruni see as impeding the provision of accurate information and reliable facts? What kinds of barriers are considered in his article? What should these journalists do today in order to help us trust them? Consider the audience Maggie Jackson is addressing. We know that she is focused on inattention. Does she make a cogent point insofar as the duty we as listeners/viewers/readers have to discerning reliable facts? Note them and consider if they would be/should be acceptable for most reasonable readers. Step Two: After reading these three articles, and reviewing your notes (I know you had previously taken notes), choose another article that we can consider as valuable insofar as it explains the goal of ethical journalists. Note how the author supports or refutes the position of one or two of the authors we have read. Choose one or two of the authors that we have read, one or two who support the new author’s position as to the role, obligation journalists today have for their audiences.
