effects of voids on mechanical
Title
AssignmentTutorOnline
Analytical modelling of effects of voids on mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of biocomposites.
Synopsis / Description
Voids are known to have significant effects on the mechanical properties of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) biocomposites. Moreover, voids are the major defects in old and modern manufacturing techniques (autoclaving, hot compression moulding, resin transfer moulding etc.) of FRP composite materials. For bio-based composites, voids do not only come from manufacturing processes, they are inherent in the fibres, taking the form of porosity. Some natural fibres are also hollow, which may not be completely filled during impregnation. Most bio-based thermosetting resins are water-based and constitute a source of voids during hot compression processing. For automotive applications, these composites are basically produced using the hot compression method. It will be a good research to find out how these voids affect both thermal and mechanical properties of commonly used biocomposites, using analytical modelling approach. The results will be validated, using experimental data available in recent, relevant and good quality literature. Note: Analytical modelling/simulation skill is essential, using MATLAB, among others.
Technical Support Required
Simulation/Design Laboratories: ABAQUS, ANSYS or any relevant sofware for finite element analysis (FEA).
Expected Outcome of the project, including artefact made, software, etc.
Provide description of the outcomes of this project. If the projects contributes to research in your area of interest, mention it in this column.
To model and simulate the effect of voids (inherent in fibres and manufacturing defects) on the properties of short and long FRP biocomposites. In other words, to model the presence of voids, especially in short wood and/or long FRP biocomposites (60 – 75 wt.% fibre content) and examine their effects on the mechanical and thermo-mechanical behaviours of biocomposites. The voids could be in three forms/voids from: (a) poor impregnation, (b) natural fibres and (c) manufacturing processes.
