Assignment Essay: American History Before 1877

Name:
Topic: The Boston Massacre
Research Questions:
1. What was the Boston Massacre?
2. What led to the Boston Massacre?
3. Who started the Boston Massacre?
Thesis Statement: Although the presence of the British soldiers in Boston caused the Boston Massacre, other events such as the ratification of the Stamp Act of 1765 and the enactment of the Townshend Acts of 1767 enacted the occurrence of Boston Massacre.
Sources:
Michael Burgan’s book “The Boston Massacre” describes the street fight in 1770 between British troops and Boston residents. According to Burgan (2005), the city of Boston, Massachusetts, had seen frequent protests against the British empire for the taxes it imposed on its American colonies. As a result, British leaders agreed that British soldiers would be needed in Boston to protect government officials and maintain order. British soldiers arrived in Boston in 1768. Most Bostonians were enraged by their arrival (Burgan, 2005). The arrival of British soldiers signaled to many Bostonians that the British government did not recognize or respect people’s rights. According to Burgan (2005), Bostonians were so angry at the troops that they insulted them when they saw them, especially on the streets. On March 5, 1770, this feeling erupted into deadly violence. In the end, five residents were killed by British soldiers. Six people were also injured by British soldiers. The ratification of the Stamp Act of 1765 and the Townshend Acts of 1767 were also factors in the massacre. Overall, the plot of the book is compelling. However, it is too brief, providing little insight into the subject.
The events leading up to the Boston Massacre are depicted in Joanne Mattern’s book “the Cost of Freedom.” According to Mattern (2003), the British government imposed exorbitant taxes on its thirteen American colonies. As a result, many basic goods became prohibitively expensive. The colonists asked British officials to lower taxes, but they refused, making them sad. According to Mattern (2003), the colonists desired independence from British rule. As a result, the British government decided to send soldiers to the colonies to ensure that the laws were followed. Boston had the most British soldiers of any of the colonies. However, the residents were dissatisfied with the soldiers’ presence in their town. The soldiers and colonists clashed as a result of their feelings. Crispus Attucks was among those who despised British soldiers. The book is too short to provide a detailed account of the massacre.
Revere’s historical engraving of the Boston Massacre, “The Bloody Massacre,” depicts a deadly fight between British soldiers and colonists in Boston. According to the engraving, Bostonians were dissatisfied with the presence of British troops in their city. The engraving expressed outrage at the soldiers’ actions and served as a powerful tool in rallying residents against the British government. Although the engraving depicts interesting scenes, they are not historically accurate. It depicts a group of Redcoats (British soldiers) shooting at helpless and unarmed people. There were no such military operations in reality.
