In most societies, punishing criminals is one of the most common ways that people try to stop criminal behavior. People who are on probation have been charged with breaking the law, but instead of going to jail, they are put under a period of supervised restrictions in the community. A probation Service Order is one of the most common alternatives to jail time, especially for minor criminal offenses. Most of the time, this intervention is used as a social or legal punishment for minor or first-time offenders. This research study looks at a number of issues related to probationers. These include, but are not limited to, the history of probation as a form of punishment, the requirements that offenders must meet in order to serve their time as probationers, and the pros and cons of using this form of punishment. It will also talk about the ways that probationers are rehabilitated and the problems that the probation service faces when it works with people who have been convicted.
Past research on social correction programs, such as probation, seems to have focused mostly on how they help the criminal justice system grow by putting more people under state control. Even though there are a lot of people on probation, it’s surprising that there aren’t many studies that look at the relationship between probationers, revocation, jail, and people who are already in jail (Skeem et al., 2017). Because of this, not much is known or understood about how the increase in the number of probationers leads to mass incarceration or how or if probation works to make up for and cancel out the increase in incarceration rates. So, the goal of this research is to find out if probation does what it’s supposed to do, if it’s a good alternative to jail time, or if probation is the main cause of probation revocations, which lead to high incarceration rates.
Doing a thorough examination and review of the relevant literature review will help build a foundation for this research study, especially by giving the related history of probationers to help show and identify the factors that led to the shift from rehabilitative to managerial intentions and convictions. The study will then look at the new penology structure of the criminal justice system and use it as a base to understand how probationers’ behavior is changing and what the results and effects of these changes are. This will be done by using the concepts of net widening and back-end net widening to help study and understand the contradictions in how probationers act (Guo and Metcalfe, 2022). It will also talk about some research studies on identifying risk in order to give more information and analysis on how the actions of probationers could change or add to the high rates of incarceration in the population.
Even though laws about probationers are usually clear and to the point, and even though this type of intervention has been shown to be a more humane and less expensive option than putting people in jail, it has yet to be shown whether both the probationers and the community as a whole have benefited from it. Its effects haven’t been evaluated and assessed in a systematic way very often, and there hasn’t been much feedback from independent evaluations of how probation is used to help decide if a real and reliable probation program has been set up and if it can meet the goals of making laws (Campbell et al., 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers).
