EXAMPLE TO USE AND POST TO RESPOND TO:
In the article “The Passion Paradigm: Professional Adherence to and
Consequences of the Ideology of “Do What You Love” I was intrigued by how the author, Lindsay DePalma, introduced and discussed the passion paradigm and ideology for the new economy.
It introduces how there have been many changes in the workplace and economy in the last few decades. Structuralists and cultural scholars have made these changes. Structuralists forget to address the role that culture has in individuals in the workplace, while cultural scholars believe that material structures change the economy. Working toward a new economy will change those beliefs. This study looks at professionals’ work and aims to base the research they obtain to identify what the new economy should entail. Professional work is intense and typically self-centered, but they also love their job. Scholars are very passionate about the new economy, but although they are passionate about it, how it works is misleading. The research project is researching how professionals in all fields find their passion, which allows us to understand our world. This is described as a passion paradigm. The researchers believe that the passion paradigm encourages performance in the workplace. By understating people better and their culture, it will allow for a more enjoyable environment. In cultures, it is not the material structures that is built upon but by psychological needs and identity. Culture and independent values shape a work environment. Identifying the work environment will allow for a healthier workplace. By studying and identifying cultural structures, it will reflect positive capitalism. Ideology is also a prominent aspect of the study, and is believed to change when the workplace does. Ideology is the act of doing what you love. One can observe the qualities that make them unique and compare them to a job that fits those characteristics. This would express positive effects on the workplace. The study then shifted to a sociological point of view and demonstrated that literature has always shown professionals who do not work justifying those adverse effects. This study looks at professional jobs in the broader lense. It discusses how they are more reliable when someone is passionate about something, especially when getting paid. In the past, work passion has never been an option. It has always been pain or pleasure in the workplace. Sociologist agrees that loving one job produces positive energy and that the passion schema will work in the new economy.
Research shows that ideology tool was used to navigate work and how diversity versus passion is in professionals. When researching, they only studied people with a college education. They interviewed various applicants and provided them with an option to work in a different environment, which helped identify the conceptions of work—studying a variety of occupations allowed them to compare people with diverse backgrounds. The feedback they received from the applicants was beneficial. They believe that work takes up so much of your time, so it should be something that enriches happiness. Although there will always be ups and downs in the workplace, it is possible to do still what you love every day. Doing that can provide a purpose in life and benefit the person and the employers as well. Passionate work can also reflect service to self. Everyone agreed that passion is the broad ideology for working for the new economy. The passion paradigm is empowering and can determine what one’s life will look like. It will also benefit psychology’s effect on people and reduce negativity. The data collected from the scholars helped identify and understand how the passion paradigm is used. In the new economy, identifying the culture will be essential to perpetuate not equal and oppressive capitalistic relations, which could encourage people to pursue a career they enjoy.
Lindsay DePalma discussed the passion paradigm and ideology well; however, the author should have added additional aspects to the study. The main topics of this sociological forum focus on organizational structures and cultures, individual perspectives, and workers’ health, with a particular interest in gender inequality. The dynamic definition of work passion contributes to the flexibility of the passion paradigm. Work passion was described by the professionals in the study as attraction, enjoyment, motivation, and perseverance. These different but connected features fluctuate best to represent the context. I think workers may suffer if ideology emphasizes the intrinsic satisfaction of enjoying one’s employment. Businesses and individuals use passion to rationalize or reframe the negative effects in their professions or jobs. Individual work passion experiences might have disparate and contradictory outcomes, but we can not fully comprehend why. This is due to the fact that we have a remarkable lack of understanding of what work passion means to professionals and how the passion paradigm operates in practice. Non-linear career paths are designed to be managed as a business of one for today’s professionals. I believe that the passion paradigm gives people a work ethic that is equally flexible and individualistic and that Lindsay DePalma should have included these aspects in the study.
