Learning Outcomes:
a. demonstrate an ability to communicate simple and complex ideas in a variety of writing styles;
b. consider and select the appropriate writing style and structure for a given communication purpose;
c. apply the conventions of spelling, grammar, editing and referencing systems to written forms.
Description:
Students complete weekly in-class writing activities to develop knowledge and skills in the various styles of writing
they will experience in digital media. The following activities are assessable.
§ Week 2: 1A Writing for an Audience (30%)
o Find a sponsored Facebook ad and write a 1-page (500 word) document describing the audience,
including the demographics, psychographics and an image. Write an original post for this client in
the tone of voice appropriate for the audience (Maximum of 75 words).
§ Week 3: 1B Academic Writing (30%)
o Choose an online article about a current topic that interests you. Write a 1000-word essay of the
article expressing your own opinion of the issue (take into account the tone, language and
information shared). Start with an abstract (introduction) where you state you position; present
your research to back-up your argument; summarise your argument in the conclusion. The research
must be supported by at least two authoritative references, cited in Macleay/Harvard referencing.
§ Week 5: 1C Digital Storytelling (40%)
o Prepare a digital media release for an upcoming event that presents a strong narrative that can be
developed into a number of digital media story elements. 500 words.
After review and improvement, student submit a portfolio of writing in week 7 for marking.
