Question description
Previously you answered my questions. Now i am in class discussion. I wanna to comments one of the class met. IHere i give you two comments. you will response only one person .Person (1) I think there are certain times when euphemisms are needed. There are people who can take the straight forward truth and there are some people who need to be given the truth in a lighthearted manner. Sometimes using euphemisms will bring light to a darker situation. It also seems that in today’s time we tend to use euphemisms more often, being that we live in a more politically correct world. The only euphemism I can think of for my job would be a correctional facility instead of a jail. I have found that things are very straight forward with my current career.I truly believe there are euphemisms that are based on geography. In the south some women say “bless your heart” when they truly mean someone is not very smart but they don’t want to sound rude. I do feel like this type of language is justified every time it is used. Sometimes we tell kids that pets ran away when truly they died. Also saying two people are sleeping together is a more polite way of saying they are having sex. It seems euphemisms are prevalent in everyday communication and people will continue to find new ways to re-word things in a more pleasant or not so pleasant way. orPerson # 2Based on language structure and context euphemisms may be used in a positive or negative way. I tend to believe that most people try to use them in a positive way as not to offend anyone. When I am writing I try to use euphemisms in terms described to be politically correct. For example I would say apprehended versus arrested when describing someone taken into custody. Arrested has more of a negative tone. So a defense lawyer may want to use apprehended versus arrested when defending their client in court before a judge. I have used euphemisms in the work place when communicating with co-workers. When something needs to be cleaned or sanitized I would ask someone to contact environmental services instead of house keeping. It just sounds more professional. In today’s political climate people are very sensitive to language and some words or phrases are considered to be hot buttons. For example one might describe someone as being of middle eastern descent versus Muslim. In the context of religion some Muslim’s feel as is they have been stereotyped and automatically associated with terrorist.I have no problem with using euphemisms based on my point of view or the message I am trying to convey. Here are some examples:Laid off instead of fired/terminated Janitor instead of porterConference instead of meeting Sodium instead of saltSenior citizen instead of elderly Intoxicated instead of drunkIncarcerated instead of jail time Not the sharpest knife in the draw instead of dumbI have heard politicians when challenged on a wrong doing use terms that rubbed me the wrong way. For example they would state in response to a question “we will look into it”. When they would have been better served by stating “we are conducting an investigation”.
