Dress (about 1860)   The history in the picture says, “this type of fashionable and expensive garment would have allowed a woman spying for the confederacy access to proper social events.” But Foner points out that women had took on a different role in the war. ” For many northern women, the conflict open new doors of opportunity. Women took advantage of the wartime labor shortage to move into jobs in factories and into certain largely male professions, particularly nursing.” “Some women took a direct part in military campaigns. Clara Barton, a clerk in the Patent Office in Washington, D.C. when the war began, traveled with the Army of Virginia, helping to organize supply lines and nursing wounded soldiers.” (537) This picture adds up my understanding to the past because we can see the role that women had in the civil war. Their role was important.2. Dr. Charles Lee’s surgical kit.    I found this to link up to the text in the sense that as Foner states, “Medical care remained primitive. ‘I believe the doctors kill more than they cure.’ wrote an Alabama private in 1862. (514) I don’t think that the army men were prepared to the modern tools of warfare and probably thought that the doctors were useless. The wounds caused my the modern tools of warfare probably caught the doctors by surprise because they were not use to treating those types of wounds.3. Prosthetic legs.    Reading the history of this picture gives a far beyond understanding on the civil war. It gives detail of the wounds and how it was amputated. it also says that anesthesia was used and that was a new tool in the surgical arsenal. I don’t recall reading in the text about this and how some of the medical procedures were done. It might not be too important but this picture gives a better understanding on the casualties of war.
