Union Negotiations

  

1.  Farm workers had been in dispute with Sakuma Brother’s Berry Farm  for the past several years before reaching a contract in June of 2017.  While the workers won a settlement in court in 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay, the workers claim  Sakuma Brothers did not made good on those promises and continue to  violate work contracts. Their demands included: a fair wage, better  working conditions, and better living conditions for migrant workers.  Sakuma Brothers insisted that their wages are fair and in line or higher  than industry standards. Many of the workers organized under a new  union called Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ) to increase their  collective bargaining power and negotiate the current collective  bargaining agreement.

Research the negotiations between Familias Unidas por la Justicia  (FUJ) farm workers’ union and the Sakuma Brothers Berry Farm. How do you  think the cultural backgrounds of the two parties affect negotiations?  When the farm workers voted to form a union, how do you think that  affected their negotiations with Sakuma Brothers? How would things  change if this was occurring right now?

The Sakuma Brothers Berry Farm Company is a fruit and vegetable  company located in Burlington, Washington.   This company uses  indigenous families that are Mixteco and Triqui. These families have  picked fruit for the Sakuma Brothers Berry Farm Company for decades.   The issues that were the foundation of the complaints were wages, and  better working conditions.   The FUJ took the Sakuma Brothers Berry Farm  to court and forces them to the negotiation table.  The FUJ was  successful in gaing more wages and benefits for the worker.  The  cultural background that effected these negotiations by using people  that have something in common with thee workers.  The FUJ is the first  indigenous led union in the state of Washington, and have a genuine  interest in helping people that really have no voice in a foreign land.   This is a victory for all indigenous workers that are used to harvest  crops.                           
The history of the Sakuma family dates back to the beginning of the  century.  Ironically, the Sakuma family stated in the same position that  Mixteco and Triqui are in.  The Sakuma family could not own land but  was known for growing strawberries.  Somewhere along the line the Sakuma  Brothers Berry Farm forgot where they came from and started worrying  about profit.  I think the FUJ did an outstanding job forcing the issues  of better wages and working conditions.  Hopefully the reminds the  Sakuma Brothers Berry Farm Company of how they started under a difficult  situation.   
Under the current administration I do not think the FUJ would have  won the case n the Washington Supreme Court.  Nothing this is not made  in or is not from the US will not do well in the current court system  and atmosphere in the US.
