Androgynous Thinking Essay

Find and analyze a piece of writing that you feel exemplifies Virginia Woolf’s concept of “androgynous thinking”. This does not have to be a full text — excerpts are fine. Explain how and why you believe this work was created by someone practicing “androgynous thinking” — be specific and use examples to support your claim. The writer does not necessarily have to identify as a woman. Focus less on narrative or story and more on the way it is written, consider how Woolf thinks of “masculine” versus “feminine” writing, and how androgynous writing marries these ideas.

Androgynous Thinking
Androgynous thinking involves reasoning with an open, evocative mind while still being imaginative, passionate and sincere. Virginia Woolf, one of the best English writers in the 19th century, explains her theory of androgynous reasoning in her piece; A Room of One’s Own. In her work, there are cases where flexibility becomes evident in both the lives of a person as well as an artist. Her concept of creative thinking alternated between male and female ideologies.
Woolf argues that androgynous writing liberates writers and gives them a chance to practice a design of writing which is more imaginative and satisfying. In A Room of One’s Own, Woolf focuses on the cons of gender tagging by showing how submissiveness perception of women towards men in the society and them being shut out from higher education has bounded their creative potentialities. These limitations of gender roles should be transcended, that way one is ideally creative (Showalter). She, however, acknowledges how gender discourse creates hurdles for both men and women. Woolf also alludes that a mind that is completely masculine cannot come up with anything more than a mind which is completely feminine. According to her. gender is a creative hinderance for artists.
Woolf also argues that though one may be man, the feminine part of the brain still has an effect on him. The masculine part of the brain also has an effect on a lady. This argument aimed towards showing a union and balance between opposites hence giving a fulfilling pattern of life (Wright). According to societal believes, women are perceived to be more sensitive while men are seen to be strong. Virginia Woolf, however, argues that the androgynous mind does not conform to these norms. She says that they are simply innate parts of an artist. Passionate limits of sexual typecasts liberty will lead to absolute objectivity (Farwell 19).
Woolf considers androgyny as a celebration of imaginative entrustment and a criticization of biased male and female capacitation. She portrays the androgynous mind as the best mind.
