Bloom’s Taxonomy
Bloom’s Taxonomy is a framework for classifying educational learning objectives into different levels of complexity and specificity. It was developed by Benjamin Bloom and his colleagues in 1956, and revised by a group of cognitive psychologists, curriculum theorists and instructional researchers in 2001. The taxonomy consists of three domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Each domain has six categories, arranged from simple to complex and concrete to abstract.
The cognitive domain involves the mental skills and knowledge that learners acquire. The six categories in this domain are:
– **Remembering**: The ability to recall facts and basic concepts from memory.
– **Understanding**: The ability to explain ideas or concepts, interpret information, and summarize meaning.
– **Applying**: The ability to use learned information in new situations or contexts.
– **Analyzing**: The ability to break down information into parts, identify relationships and patterns, and compare and contrast different aspects.
– **Evaluating**: The ability to judge the value or quality of information, arguments, or methods based on criteria and standards.
– **Creating**: The ability to generate new ideas, products, or solutions by combining or reorganizing existing elements.
The affective domain involves the feelings, emotions, attitudes, and values that learners develop. The six categories in this domain are:
– **Receiving**: The willingness to pay attention to stimuli or phenomena.
– **Responding**: The active participation or involvement in learning activities.
– **Valuing**: The recognition of the worth or importance of something or someone.
– **Organizing**: The ability to arrange one’s values into a coherent system or hierarchy.
– **Characterizing**: The adoption of a consistent set of values that guide one’s behavior or actions.
– **Internalizing**: The integration of one’s values into one’s identity or personality.
The psychomotor domain involves the physical skills and abilities that learners acquire. The six categories in this domain are:
– **Perception**: The ability to use sensory cues to guide motor activity.
– **Set**: The readiness to act or perform a certain way.
– **Guided Response**: The ability to imitate a demonstrated skill or behavior.
– **Mechanism**: The ability to perform a skill or behavior with some degree of proficiency or confidence.
– **Complex Overt Response**: The ability to perform a complex skill or behavior with a high level of accuracy, speed, coordination, or quality.
– **Adaptation**: The ability to modify one’s skills or behaviors to meet changing situations or demands.
