A 24-year-old client newly diagnosed with seizures is prescribed phenytoin. The client asks the nurse if she will still be able to take her oral contraceptive medication. How should the nurse respond?
Adherence to the full treatment regimen is critical. TB is treated with a combination of antibiotics taken for 6-9 months. It is important to take all medications as prescribed and not stop early, even if symptoms improve, in order to cure the infection completely and prevent drug resistance from developing.
Proper precautions must be taken to prevent transmission. TB is transmitted through the air via coughs, sneezes or talking. The client should cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and stay in a well-ventilated area separate from others when possible during the first few weeks of treatment, before they are no longer contagious.
Follow-up is necessary. The nurse would emphasize the importance of keeping all medical appointments, getting periodic chest x-rays, and taking the medications as directed under a doctor’s supervision. This helps ensure the infection is cured and prevent reactivation of the disease.
The nurse would likely provide education on these key points both verbally and in written form to the client and their family members living in their household. This helps everyone involved understand what is needed for successful treatment and prevention of spread.
