Introduction
Evidence based practice in psychology (EBPP) is the incorporation of research-based evidence, clinician’s expertise, patient’s characteristics, preferences and culture in the provision of patient care. The word patient refer to children, adolescents, adults and groups seeking psychological care. EBPP was developed by the American Psychological Association 2005 presidential task force.
Importance of EBPP
EBPP is crucial as it promotes psychological practice. This is the diagnosis, assessment, case formulation, treatment planning and decision making in psychological care. Also, it enhances public health by offering evidence based treatments to patients. It is cost-effective as it is not based on trial and error thus the consumer gets the right medication. Trial and error methods lead to wastage of funds.
Research methodology and design
Various research methodologies are used in EBPP. This includes clinical observation, quantitative analysis, single-case experimental design, public health and ethnographic research, randomized controlled trials and meta-analysis.
Meta-analysis is a research design that quantitatively analyzes results from multiple studies. Public health and ethnographic research design involve tracking utility, acceptance, and availability of mental health treatments and finding out how to maximize their utility. Clinical observation is observing patients to track progress while they are undergoing treatment. Single case experimental design is comparing two individuals or groups with similar characteristics to establish causal relationships. The qualitative analysis describes the demographics behavior and characteristics of people in psychotherapy.
Evidence based intervention offered to the patients should be evaluated in two distinct ways; efficacy and clinical utility. Efficacy evaluates the relationship between the evidence based intervention and the disorder. The clinical utility looks at the costs, evidence acceptability importance and applicability of the intervention.
Example of EBPP
EBPP is utilized when offering psychotherapy to children with autism spectrum disorder and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for preventing relapse in individuals with severe depression.
Patient characteristics
The main target of EBPP is the patient and the clinician. Several characteristics are considered when offering treatment to patients with psychological problems. First, the age of the individual. Secondly, development history, this is the health background of the individual. Thirdly, symptoms and disorders. Finally, their personalities, behaviors, and culture.
Conclusion
Evidence based practice in psychology advocates for the incorporation of research-based evidence, psychiatrist expertise, patient’s characteristics, culture and preferences in patient care. It has played a vital role in promoting public health and psychological practice. There are various methodologies used in research such as observation, qualitative analysis, Public health and ethnographic research design.
